ESG Investing Leadership Team - Jeff Eckel

Jeffrey W. Eckel

Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer

Mr. Eckel has served as our president, chief executive officer, and chairman of our board of directors since 2013 and was with the predecessor of our company as president and chief executive officer since 2000 and prior to that from 1985 to 1989 as a senior vice president. Mr. Eckel is a member of the board of directors of the Alliance to Save Energy and is a member of the President’s Council of Ceres, Inc., the board of trustees of The Nature Conservancy of Maryland and D.C., and is a director of the New York City-based Urban Green Council. He was appointed by the governor of Maryland to the board of the Maryland Clean Energy Center in 2011 where he served until 2016 while also serving as its chairman from 2012 to 2014. Mr. Eckel has over 35 years of experience in financing, owning and operating infrastructure and energy assets. Mr. Eckel received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Miami University in 1980 and a Master of Public Administration degree from Syracuse University, Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, in 1981. He holds Series 24, 63 and 79 securities licenses.

Jeffrey A. Lipson

Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer

Mr. Lipson joined Hannon Armstrong in 2019. Prior to joining the company, he was president and chief executive officer of Congressional Bank; where he remains a director. Prior to that, Mr. Lipson was the senior vice president and treasurer of CapitalSource; and a senior vice president in Corporate Treasury at Bank of America and its predecessor FleetBoston Financial. He holds an MBA in finance from New York University’s Leonard N. Stern School of Business and a Bachelor of Science in Economics from Pennsylvania State University. Mr. Lipson serves on the board of directors of the Jewish Council for the Aging of Greater Washington.

Jeffrey A. Lipson

Mr. Lipson joined Hannon Armstrong in 2019. Prior to joining the company, he was president and chief executive officer of Congressional Bank; where he remains a director. Prior to that, Mr. Lipson was the senior vice president and treasurer of CapitalSource; and a senior vice president in Corporate Treasury at Bank of America and its predecessor FleetBoston Financial. He holds an MBA in finance from New York University’s Leonard N. Stern School of Business and a Bachelor of Science in Economics from Pennsylvania State University. Mr. Lipson serves on the board of directors of the Jewish Council for the Aging of Greater Washington.

J. Brendan Herron

Executive Vice President

Mr. Herron serves as an executive vice president in a leadership role focused on the company’s strategy and growth initiatives. He previously served as our chief financial officer from 2013 to 2019 and served in a variety of roles at the predecessor of our company and its affiliates from 1994 to 2005, and from 2011 to 2013. Mr.  Herron has over 25 years of experience in structuring, executing and operating infrastructure and technology investments. He formerly served on the U.S. Commerce Secretary’s Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Advisory Committee and is presently a member of the Board of Trustees of Calvert Hall College High School (Baltimore, MD). Mr. Herron received a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting and computer science from Loyola University Maryland in 1982 and a Master of Business Administration degree from Loyola University Maryland in 1987 and has passed the CPA and CMA examinations.

Mr. Rose has been an executive vice president since 2015 and our chief investment officer since 2017. He served as our chief operating officer from 2015 to 2017, our chief investment officer from 2013 to 2015 and has been with the Company and its predecessor since 2000. He has been involved with a vast majority of our transactions since 2000. He earned a joint Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Richmond in 2000, a Master of Business Administration degree from the Darden School of Business Administration at the University of Virginia in 2009, is a CFA charter holder and has passed the CPA examination. He holds a Series 63 and 79 securities licenses.

Nathaniel J. Rose, CFA

Executive Vice President and General Counsel

Mr. Chuslo has served as an executive vice president and our general counsel since 2013 and with the predecessor of our company as general counsel since 2008. Mr. Chuslo is responsible for internal governance matters and is actively involved in structuring, developing, negotiating and closing transactions. He has more than 25 years of experience in the fields of securities, commercial finance and energy development, U.S. federal regulation and project finance. Mr. Chuslo received a Bachelor of Arts degree in history from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1982 and a Juris Doctorate from the Georgetown University Law Center in 1990.

Mr. McMahon has served us as an executive vice president since 2015 and is the head of our portfolio management group. He has been with Hannon Armstrong and its predecessor company since 2000 in a variety of roles, including as a senior vice president from 2007 to 2015. He has played a role in analyzing, negotiating, structuring, and managing several billion dollars of transactions. Mr. McMahon received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California, San Diego in 1993, and is a CFA charter holder. He holds Series 24, 63 and 79 securities licenses.

Robert Johnson

Senior Vice President, Public Sector Investments

Mr. Johnson is responsible for growing Hannon Armstrong’s financing solutions in the public sector which includes the federal, state & local and healthcare market segments. Mr. Johnson has been at the leading edge of the energy efficiency industry where he has built businesses across a broad range of systems and services. Prior to joining Hannon Armstrong, Mr. Johnson held executive leadership positions at multinational organizations such as Cooper Industries where he led global sales for one of their divisions, Ingersoll Rand (Trane) where he led North American Institutional Sales which included healthcare, government and education segments, and Johnson Controls Federal Systems Division where he was the global sales leader. Mr. Johnson began his career at Honeywell where he held leadership positions in various divisions of Honeywell during his 15-year tenure. He has been published in Military Engineer magazine and holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Maryland.

Mr. Martin joined Hannon Armstrong in 2017 as its chief technology officer. Prior to joining Hannon Armstrong, he served as vice president of information technology and chief security officer at Congressional Bank where he oversaw all IT operations. Charles W. Melko, CPA

Senior Vice President and Chief Accounting Officer

Mr. Melko has served as our senior vice president and chief accounting officer since 2017. He joined Hannon Armstrong in 2016 as a senior vice president and controller. Prior to this role, he served in a number of roles at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP since 2005, including as a senior manager in the National Professional Services Group where he focused on complex financial instruments accounting issues for energy clients. Mr. Melko received a Bachelor of Science degree in accountancy in 2002, a Master of Business Administration degree in 2005 and a Master of Science degree in accountancy from Wheeling Jesuit University in 2005. He holds a CPA license in West Virginia and Maryland.

Susan Nickey

Managing Director

Ms. Nickey joined Hannon Armstrong in 2014 as a managing director. Previously, she founded and served as chief executive officer of Threshold Power. Prior to Threshold, Ms. Nickey was the chief financial officer of ACCIONA Energy North America from 2007-2010 and was a managing director of investment banking in the project finance group of Mesirow Financial before that. She currently serves on the board of directors of the American Wind Energy Association and its finance committee and the board of directors of the American Council of Renewable Energy and its executive committee. Ms. Nickey is a frequent speaker at renewable energy events, particularly on topics related to capital markets and financing trends for clean energy, including wind, solar and storage. Ms. Nickey holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Notre Dame and a Master of Science in foreign service from Georgetown University.

Managing Director - Private Investment Team Lead

Mr. Pangburn joined Hannon Armstrong in 2013 and currently serves as a managing director, responsible for leading all private sector investments, including, solar, wind, and land-related products. Prior to Hannon Armstrong, Mr. Pangburn worked at MP2 Capital, a solar development and financing company, where he was responsible for structuring the firm’s transactions. Previously, Mr. Pangburn worked in the private capital group at New York Life Investments, focusing on utilities, energy and infrastructure debt and equity investments. Mr. Pangburn received his Bachelor of Arts degree in economics from Drew University and is a CFA charter holder.

Dana M. Smith, SPHR, SHRM-SCP

Chief Human Resources Officer

Ms. Smith joined Hannon Armstrong in 2017 as its chief human resources officer where she focuses on culture, strategy and organizational development. Previously, Ms. Smith was chief human resources officer for publicly-traded American Capital and its affiliates. For eight years prior, she was senior vice president of human resources and corporate marketing for CapitalSource. Additionally, Ms. Smith led human resources at subsidiaries of Constellation Energy and Sylvan Learning Systems and worked in various positions domestically and overseas for Citicorp earlier in her career. Ms. Smith currently serves on the board of directors of The Y in Central Maryland and is a member of the Senior HR Executive Forum. She is recognized as a Senior Professional in HR (SPHR) by the HR Certification Institute and Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP) by the Society for Human Resource Management. Ms. Smith holds a Bachelor of Science in economics from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and a Master of Science in organizational counseling from Johns Hopkins University.  She was named one of The Daily Record’s 2019 Top 100 Women for her professional achievement, community leadership and mentoring.
